1. Chandler Used to Be an Ostrich Town
Before tech companies and master-planned neighborhoods, Chandler was known for ostrich farms in the early 1900s. At the time, ostrich feathers were extremely popular in fashion, especially for hats and decorative wear. Ranchers in the area raised ostriches specifically for their feathers, creating a unique agricultural niche.
That history lives on through the Chandler Ostrich Festival.
What might seem like a random celebration actually honors a real part of the city’s past.
2. It’s a Major Tech Hub (Not Just Suburbs)
While many people think of Chandler as just residential neighborhoods and shopping centers, it’s actually a key player in the semiconductor industry. The city is home to one of the largest chip manufacturing operations in the country, operated by Intel
This presence helped earn the region the nickname “Silicon Desert,” positioning Chandler as one of Arizona’s most important technology centers.
3. The City Was Founded by a Veterinarian
Chandler was founded in 1912 by Alexander John Chandler
Before becoming a land developer, he worked in veterinary medicine and later invested in irrigation systems and farmland. His planning and infrastructure efforts laid the foundation for what would eventually become one of Arizona’s fastest-growing cities.
4. It Was Designed as a Planned Community From the Start
Unlike many cities that developed gradually and without structure, Chandler was carefully planned from its early days. Streets were mapped intentionally, irrigation systems were installed to support agriculture, and land was divided with long-term growth in mind.
That early planning is likely why modern Chandler still feels organized and structured, especially in its master-planned communities.
5. Downtown Chandler Is Way Older Than You Think
Although much of Chandler looks new, Downtown has roots that stretch back more than a century. One of its most iconic landmarks is the
San Marcos Hotel
Opened in 1913, it has hosted visitors for generations and remains a historic symbol of the city’s early development.
6. Chandler Has No Primary City Property Tax
One fact that surprises many residents is that Chandler does not levy a primary property tax at the city level. This financial structure has made the city appealing to homeowners and has contributed to its steady residential growth over the years.
7. It’s One of Arizona’s Safest Larger Cities
Chandler consistently ranks among the safer large cities in Arizona. Its low crime rates and well-maintained neighborhoods are major reasons families choose to settle there. Safety has played a key role in building its strong community reputation.
8. The Population Grew Extremely Fast
Chandler’s population growth has been dramatic. In 1980, the city had roughly 30,000 residents. Today, it has grown to well over 275,000. This rapid expansion explains the constant development, new housing communities, expanding roadways, and commercial growth seen throughout the city.
9. It Has Its Own Airport (But Not for Commercial Airlines)
Many people don’t realize that Chandler has its own airport:
Chandler Municipal Airport
However, it primarily serves private aircraft, corporate aviation, and flight training — not commercial airline travel. It quietly plays an important role in local aviation activity.
10. Agriculture Built the Foundation
Before becoming a tech and suburban center, Chandler was heavily agricultural. Cotton farms, irrigation canals, and farmland defined much of the landscape. The city’s early economy depended on agriculture, and that farming foundation helped support its later expansion. The modern desert city still carries the legacy of those early farming roots.
Chandler may look like a modern suburban tech city, but its roots tell a much richer story. From ostrich farms and historic landmarks to semiconductor manufacturing and rapid growth, Chandler has evolved in ways many residents don’t even realize.
